When Your Shoulder Just Won’t Move: What You Should Know About Frozen Shoulder
Ever wake up with a stiff, achy shoulder that just won’t loosen up? Or perhaps you notice your shoulder movement is limited, and normal activities start to feel more difficult. If this sounds familiar, you might be dealing with frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis. And here in San Antonio, Method Wellness and Physical Therapy is ready to help you get back to feeling your best.
So, What Is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder happens when the tissue around your shoulder joint becomes inflamed and tightens up, kind of like a sticky shrink wrap. This limits how much you can move your arm and often comes with a good deal of pain. It can be a real nuisance but don’t worry—it’s a manageable condition.
Who Gets It?
While anyone can develop frozen shoulder, it’s most common among people between 40 and 60 years old and happens more often in women. People with diabetes, thyroid issues, or Parkinson’s disease are especially prone, and it can sometimes happen after an injury or surgery if the shoulder is immobilized for too long.
What Are the Stages?
Frozen shoulder usually progresses through three stages—sometimes overlapping:
The Freezing Stage: You start to feel more pain and notice your shoulder doesn’t move as freely. This can last from around 6 weeks to 9 months.
The Frozen Stage: The pain might ease up a bit, but your shoulder is stiff, making everyday tasks hard—think reaching, dressing, or sleeping comfortably. This can last several months.
The Thawing Stage: Slowly, your shoulder begins to regain motion. This recovery phase can take a year or more, so patience is key.
